Cat Bates

Fox Skull Necklace, Dark Tan

Loosely based on a fox skull I found while bicycle touring a few years back. Hand carved master. Lost wax cast in Rhode Island and hand finished in house. The cord is marine grade machine braided nylon. Both color options I wax in house. I hand dye the brown and olive cord before waxing. The nude cord is pigmented rather than dyed and will fade to a pale grey color over time. Finished with signature sister clasps, the sides of which can pass through each other when the slots are lined up precisely parallel. 22”cord including clasps.

HI, I'M CAT

I live in Portland, ME.  I make my living designing and producing jewelry.

My workshop is located on the 4th floor of a sexy old mill building in Westbrook, about 20 minutes from downtown Portland.  I make this work from scratch, designing virtually every element of every piece.  There are a small number of exceptions (earrings posts, split rings, etc.), and I note these in product descriptions.  I use a variety of metalworking and fiber working techniques to create the pieces; you can learn more in the Details section.

Pieces will have subtle differences from one to the next, as everything is finished by hand.  The metal patina or cord color may be darker or lighter than the sample pictured, and the metal will have its own unique scratches and pits from finishing.   All will grow more beautiful over time as the various materials patina.  As a designer I aim for subtlety, durability, and comfort.  Most of my pieces are impervious to water & suitable for constant wear.

As the wearer, please take pride knowing that you are part of what makes the piece beautiful.
