Cat Bates Sister Necklace 1 (+colors)

The Cat Bates Sister Necklace 1 is based on traditional marine hardware. 3D printed master. Lost wax cast in California and hand finishing in house. See details below for more information on the creation of this piece.

Details

  •  Lost wax cast in California and hand finishing in house. The sides can pass through each other when the slots are lined up precisely perpendicular. This kind of mechanism is also referred to as a gangent hook, kissing clip, or brummel hook. When I was a kid my father first showed me how to make them using bolt cutters and chain links.
  • The brown and nude cords are marine grade machine braided nylon. I wax both in house.
  • I hand dye the brown cord before waxing.
  • The tan cord is pigmented rather than dyed and will fade to a pale grey color over time.
  • The indigo is 100% cotton.  Dyed to spec here in Maine. Like raw denim, the indigo cord will bleed somewhat during the first week or two of wear, and will fade significantly over time.
  • 20” circumference including clasps.
  • Made in Maine

HI, I'M CAT

I live in Portland, ME.  I make my living designing and producing jewelry.

My workshop is located on the 4th floor of a sexy old mill building in Westbrook, about 20 minutes from downtown Portland.  I make this work from scratch, designing virtually every element of every piece.  There are a small number of exceptions (earrings posts, split rings, etc.), and I note these in product descriptions.  I use a variety of metalworking and fiber working techniques to create the pieces; you can learn more in the Details section.

Pieces will have subtle differences from one to the next, as everything is finished by hand.  The metal patina or cord color may be darker or lighter than the sample pictured, and the metal will have its own unique scratches and pits from finishing.   All will grow more beautiful over time as the various materials patina.  As a designer I aim for subtlety, durability, and comfort.  Most of my pieces are impervious to water & suitable for constant wear.

As the wearer, please take pride knowing that you are part of what makes the piece beautiful.
